Scientists have characterized the El Niño weather pattern emerging in the summer of 2026 as a 'super' or 'Godzilla' El Niño due to its expected strength. The designation reflects forecasts of unusually intense oceanic and atmospheric disruptions associated with the phenomenon, which typically recurs every two to seven years.
Historically, El Niño events bring heavier rainfall to southern South America, the southern United States, Central Asia, and East Africa. Conversely, they are linked to drier conditions in Australia, northern South America, West Africa, the northern United States, Canada, and parts of South, Southeast, and East Asia.
Market analysts are already responding to the anticipated impacts. A benchmark for European wheat prices increased by as much as 5.7% on Friday, signaling investor concern over potential supply disruptions. Capital Economics stated that agricultural products most affected by El Niño are soft commodities, including perishable crops. The firm also reported that the largest increases in agricultural prices during the 2023 and 2024 El Niño events were for coffee and cocoa.

The 2026 El Niño is drawing heightened scrutiny following research published this year titled “How an El Niño becomes a super El Niño,” which explores the mechanisms that amplify typical El Niño conditions into extreme events. Past 'super' events, such as those in 1982–83 and 1997–98, caused widespread weather anomalies and significant economic losses. With global food markets already sensitive to climate volatility, the projected strength of this El Niño could influence agricultural output and commodity pricing worldwide.
