ST. AUGUSTINE — A fatal crash in St. Augustine on Wednesday night resulted in the death of a 64-year-old woman and serious injuries to a 59-year-old man driving a Tesla. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office stated the crash was not the result of a police pursuit.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the intersection of State Road 16 and Ponce De Leon Blvd around 7:30 p.m. A Tesla hit a woman on a motorized scooter before striking a camera pole and bursting into flames in the Flagler Inn parking lot. The Tesla driver was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

Dash cam footage showed two St. Johns County Sheriff's deputies behind the Tesla prior to the crash. An SJSO deputy had stopped at a Circle K gas station near the intersection when an employee of a local business notified the deputy about a suspicious individual in a black Tesla. The individual then drove out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed after the deputy approached the vehicle.

The deputy reported the reckless driver over the radio to nearby units. The Tesla passed a second deputy while traveling toward the intersection of SR 16 and Ponce De Leon Blvd. The second deputy activated emergency lights to safely make a U-turn at the railroad tracks.

A neighbor, Bruce Fulton, stated he heard sounds suggesting a police car was attempting to stop another vehicle. "I was sitting upstairs on the porch, and I heard a boop-boop, you know, like a police car does when they're trying to get somebody to pull over," Fulton said. He added, "And then almost directly after that, I heard the crash, a big crunch."
