WYOMING — Yellowstone National Park implemented daily fishing closures on select rivers and streams due to warm water temperatures and low river flows. The restricted hours apply from 2 p.m. to sunrise.

The closure affects the Madison River and all its associated tributaries. The Firehole River and all its associated tributaries are also subject to the daily closure. Additionally, the Gibbon River and its associated tributaries downstream of Norris Campground are included in the new restrictions. Anglers are permitted to access these waterways between dawn and 2 p.m. daily.

In a statement, the National Park Service said, "These conditions are lethal to trout, and the closure will protect the park's native and wild trout fisheries and will remain in effect until conditions improve." Water temperatures in some rivers and streams recently exceeded 68 degrees Fahrenheit. High air temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit are projected in the coming days. The closure has no specified end date and will continue until conditions improve.

A park official stated in a written release, "The closure may be lifted, or additional restrictions and closures may be put in place depending on condition assessments." Streams and lakes not explicitly listed in the closure, such as Yellowstone Lake, remain open for fishing. However, Yellowstone Lake is closed to fishing after sunset and before sunrise. Excessive heat watches have been issued across several states, including Idaho, North Dakota, Utah, Colorado, and Montana. Yellowstone National Park borders three states.
