TEXAS — Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Tuesday morning in Texas. The incident occurred during an operation targeting four men for arrest; three other men were taken into custody.

The Department of Homeland Security alleged that Salgado Araujo weaponized his vehicle during the attempt by ICE officers to stop and arrest the individuals. At a press conference on Wednesday, Ronaldo Salgado, son of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, said, "He did not deserve to die."

Congressional representative Sylvia Garcia called for an independent investigation into Salgado Araujo's death. James Talarico, a Democratic Texas state representative, also urged a full and independent investigation. "Previous incidents have shown that this agency cannot be trusted to report all the facts," Talarico said.

Jesse Franzblau, associate director of policy with the National Immigrant Justice Center, commented on the situation. "The deaths of people in immigration prisons has reached new terrifying levels – 21 people have died in ICE detention this year alone, and now we are learning of yet another shooting death by an immigration agent on the streets of another US neighborhood," Franzblau said. He added, "Congress has given ICE and CBP billions of dollars, $70 billion alone in a bill passed just last month, with no accountability for the violence they have brought to our communities."

Since the second Trump administration took office, there have been 10 fatal shootings by federal immigration officials nationwide. At least four immigration-related shooting deaths, including Salgado Araujo's, involved victims who were driving vehicles when they were shot. A 2024 investigation by the Trace, Business Insider and Type Investigations found that 23 people were killed in shootings by ICE officers between 2015 and 2021.
