PORTUGAL — Singer Bonnie Tyler died in a hospital in Portugal from an illness for which she was receiving treatment, according to an announcement from her family and team. "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for," Tyler's family reported.

Tyler released the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in 1983. The song spent four weeks at No. 1 on the charts and has accumulated more than 1 billion streams. Its music video has also surpassed 1 billion views and was filmed in a former asylum in Surrey.

Tyler began her music career after talent scout Roger Bell discovered her and brought her to London for demo sessions. She released her debut album, "The World Starts Tonight," in 1977 under RCA, which included the hit "Lost in France." In 1978, she had a No. 3 hit with "It's a Heartache." After her success with RCA, Tyler signed with Sony.

Tyler requested to work with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman after observing Meat Loaf perform on the BBC. Steinman introduced Tyler to "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which was the debut single for her fifth studio album, "Faster Than the Speed of Night." Steinman borrowed the lyric "Turn around, bright eyes" from his 1969 musical "The Dream Engine." Roy Bittan played piano on the track, and Max Weinberg played drums. Tyler earned a Grammy nomination for best rock vocal performance for the album "Faster Than the Speed of Night." She also received a Grammy nomination for best pop vocal performance for "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Pat Benatar won the Grammy for best rock vocal performance for "Love Is a Battlefield," and Irene Cara won for best pop vocal performance with "Flashdance — What a Feeling."

Tyler released the album "Rocks and Honey" in 2013, which included the song "Believe in Me." This song was selected to represent the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. Tyler performed "Believe in Me" during a rehearsal for the final at the Malmo Arena in Malmo, Sweden, on May 17, 2013. She finished in 19th place at the contest. "It was an absolutely wonderful atmosphere there. I was being interviewed every 15, 20 minutes, and when I walked out onstage behind the British flag, I thought the roof was going to come off!" Tyler said.

In 2019, Tyler performed at a Vatican Christmas concert before Pope Francis. Her 2019 album, "Between the Earth and the Stars," featured duets with Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, and Francis Rossi. Queen Elizabeth II awarded Tyler an MBE for her services to music in 2023.
