PLEASANT POINT PASSAMAQUODDY RESERVATION — Sipayik Elementary School initiated a five-week coastal erosion study in March 2025 with nine 5th-grade students from the Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation. This educational program combined field work, historical analysis, and Indigenous knowledge to examine shoreline changes.
Planning for the study began by November 2024. During the five-week program, students visited local field sites and engaged with elders who shared stories describing historical coastline conditions. Students also built erosion trays using simple materials to investigate how waves affect landforms.
The curriculum included comparing current high tide lines with historical high tide lines. Students analyzed photographs and aerial images from 1942 to 2023 to observe changes in the shoreline. They further compared 300-year-old tribal maps with future flood projections to understand long-term environmental shifts. An observer stated during the program, "Our people were scientists without having to go to school." The Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation, also known as Sipayik, is situated along the shores of Passamaquoddy Bay in Downeast Maine.
