ASPEN — Journalist Katie Couric was diagnosed with transient global amnesia after experiencing memory loss on June 27, 2026, during the Aspen Ideas Festival.

Couric, 69, displayed symptoms of the condition for several hours. Her husband, John Molner, observed her appearing weak, dizzy, and confused. Molner drove Couric to Aspen Valley Hospital, where medical staff initiated stroke protocol.

A brain MRI ruled out a stroke as the cause of her symptoms. During her initial examination at the hospital, Couric could not correctly identify the current month, year, or U.S. President. "It was Saturday, June 27, 2026. But when I was asked the month, the year, and who was president, I got them wrong," Couric said. "I wasn't sure of the month. I thought it was 2024. And I believed Joe Biden was president."

Couric stated that her memory loss lasted from approximately noon until at least 7 p.m. on June 27, 2026. "I have no idea what we talked about or what occurred when the panels ended," she said.

Before the festival, Couric visited a farmer's market in Aspen on the morning of June 27, 2026, where she purchased iced coffee, peaches, nectarines, kettle corn, and a straw hat. She repeatedly reintroduced herself to nurses at the hospital during her episode and could not recall the existence of her granddaughter, Virginia. Couric's physician told her, "Which means you lost your short-term memory. It will return tomorrow. You are safe!"

Couric later wrote about her diagnosis on Substack. She stated she did not experience common triggers for transient global amnesia, such as intense physical exertion, emotional distress, extreme temperature changes, or physiological strain.

"Once resolved, the symptoms of transient global amnesia rarely recur," the NIH reports.
