ARABIAN SEA — The U.S. Navy suspended search efforts for Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards on Sunday, more than 102 hours after a helicopter assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao directed that Cmdr. Edwards be posthumously promoted to the rank of captain.

Cmdr. Edwards was identified as the missing sailor following the incident. He was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5). Three of the helicopter's four crew members were successfully recovered. The search for Cmdr. Edwards covered more than 14,000 square miles.

The extensive search involved ships and aircraft from two carrier strike groups, two patrol and reconnaissance squadrons flying P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and multiple U.S. Air Force aircraft. Specifically, the search included the USS George H.W. Bush's HSC-5 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 46 (HSM-46), along with fixed-wing aircraft from Carrier Air Wing 7 (CVW-7) and Carrier Air Wing 9 (CVW-9). Additionally, USS Abraham Lincoln's helicopter squadrons HSC-14 and HSM-71 participated, as did Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Ross, USS Donald Cook, USS Higgins, USS Mason, and USS John Finn with HSM-51.

There is no indication that the emergency was caused by hostile action, and the cause of the incident remains under investigation. The Navy is providing mental health professionals, counselors, chaplains, and religious program support advocates to the squadron and ship's crew.

Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, conveyed sympathy. "The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family," Cimicata said. "Gabe's legacy as a husband, father, friend and fearless leader will never be forgotten."

Rebecca Edwards, Cmdr. Edwards' wife, expressed gratitude to those involved in the search. "We are profoundly grateful to every sailor, aviator, and airman who devoted countless hours, extraordinary skill, and unwavering determination in the effort to bring Gabe home," she said. "As we begin to face the difficult road ahead, we respectfully ask for privacy as we grieve together as a family."

Cmdr. Edwards, a native of Oakland, Oregon, graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in physics. He commissioned through the Naval ROTC and earned his aviator "Wings of Gold" in 2008 as a helicopter pilot. He assumed command of HSC-5 in July 2025. He accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours in the SH-60F, HH-60H, and MH-60S helicopter airframes. Cmdr. Edwards was selected for promotion to captain by the fiscal Year 2027 O-6 Line Officer Promotion Board. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and their two children.
