Communications Minister Anika Wells accused opposition figures Barnaby Joyce and Angus Taylor of suggesting Chinese involvement in a Telstra network outage without offering evidence. Wells stated that there is no current evidence to suggest malicious activity caused the outage.

Telstra attributed the major network outage to an issue with a time-keeping server. The company confirmed the outage on Wednesday and reported that 90% of services were restored after 10am AEST. Telstra CFO Michael Ackland stated on Wednesday evening that the network issues had been fully resolved, and that the outage was not the result of a cyber incident.

During the outage, the federal Triple Zero Custodian advised Telstra that some callers were prevented from connecting to emergency services. The outage also affected other services relying on mobile internet coverage, including train networks and electric vehicles. Wells stated that welfare checks were being conducted on people who had been unable to reach triple-zero services. She also stated that Telstra must "make things right" regarding the outage.

Angus Taylor questioned a connection between the Telstra outage and a Chinese missile test in the Pacific. He said, "We saw a provocative and unwelcome missile launch from the PLA yesterday, and I can understand why Australians are drawing that connection." Taylor added, "Now, I don't know whether there's any connection or not, I have no idea." Barnaby Joyce stated that China has the capacity to affect software and networks.

Wells characterized the suggestions as "irresponsible" and said, "As a general principle, I think when it comes to matters of national security, you shouldn't make stuff up."
