North Charleston police responded to a permitted block party in the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood on July 4, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m. Officers arrived after receiving reports of fireworks being fired toward passing vehicles and allegations that several attendees had begun firing guns.

Police declared the gathering over and ordered attendees to disperse after learning about the alleged gunfire. Multiple fights broke out despite repeated announcements for people to leave. Multiple officers were assaulted while attempting to separate those involved and restore order.

The North Charleston Police Department reported that two female officers sustained minor injuries during the disturbance. Video footage posted online by The Carolina Courier shows a female officer attempting to detain a woman before several people pull the officer to the ground. The footage also shows multiple individuals striking the officer before another responding officer intervened and deployed a stun gun on one individual before restraining another person.

Investigators recovered four handguns, magazines, and a makeshift spear from the scene. Authorities stated that no civilians reported injuries during the disturbance. Four people, including one adult and three juveniles, were arrested by July 7 in connection with the assaults captured on video. The North Charleston Police Department stated that assaults on law enforcement officers would not be tolerated and that those responsible would face prosecution.

Detectives are investigating reported gunfire, assaults, and other criminal activity connected to the incident. Charges are being finalized, and additional arrests remain possible as investigators continue reviewing evidence.
