Clifton Police arrested a suspect on July 7, 2025, in connection with the vandalism of a Little Free Pantry located outside the Senior Center. Clifton City Manager Gary DeMarzo announced the arrest on the evening of July 7.

The pantry had been vandalized four times in the week leading up to the arrest. These incidents included damage on July 3 and twice on July 2. Donna Popowich, an organizer for Clifton's Little Free Food Pantry, stated that the pantry was vandalized twice on July 2.

Clifton Police confirmed that food was removed from the pantry and scattered in the area during the vandalism incidents. Lieutenant Robert Anderson of the Clifton Police stated that the incident is being investigated along with other random, petty vandalism incidents in the area between city hall and the Dutch Hill neighborhood. Anderson added there is a strong indication that the food donation incident is part of a recent group of petty vandalism complaints.

Popowich noted that the attacks started on June 27, when she was informed that the pantry's door had come off. Barbara James, a co-organizer, said that the pantry was targeted on July 4 when someone made an offensive gesture toward it. James also said that an attack occurred the day after a news report detailed difficulties the pantries faced with the city's zoning regulations. Popowich reported that volunteers were working on repairing the pantry.

James said, "I see this as taking food out a child's mouth. It is wrong." She added that she believes opposition to the pantries stems from a perception that they negatively affect Clifton's image. James further commented that existing ordinances are outdated and require revision. Popowich expressed dismay, stating, "I don't know how we got here. How did this can of food become a problem?"
