UK — M&S is investing in refrigeration equipment designed to function in temperatures up to 45C. The company made the decision based on the assumption that temperatures will continue to rise.

Stuart Machin, chief executive of M&S, addressed shareholders at the group's annual meeting in London on Tuesday. Machin stated that the company experienced difficulties during a recent period of extreme heat. "There is no doubt we were struggling in the nine days of [recent] extreme heat," Machin said.

The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June day ever last month, with provisional highs reaching 37.7C. The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK was 40.3C in 2022. The Met Office announced on Monday that a third heatwave of the summer is expected to arrive in the coming days.

The new refrigeration equipment includes fridges fitted with doors to assist in maintaining cooler internal temperatures during warmer weather. In addition to these equipment upgrades, M&S ordered more ice cream after six product lines went out of stock recently due to increased demand. One of the company's ice cream suppliers hired 10 additional staff members to manage this heightened demand. The Climate Change Committee stated in May that the UK infrastructure was "built for a climate that no longer exists" and requires urgent changes to adapt to global heating.
