JACKSONVILLE — Florida State Representative Angie Nixon, a Democrat, announced her campaign for the U.S. Senate, seeking to fill the remainder of Senator Marco Rubio's six-year term. The announcement follows her involvement in protests concerning the state's 2026 congressional redistricting plan.

In late April 2026, Nixon disrupted a Florida House floor vote on new congressional maps. During the disruption, she wore a magenta jumpsuit and used a hot pink megaphone to shout, "You are violating the Florida Constitution." The Florida House subsequently passed the 2026 redistricting bill with a vote of 83-28. Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law on May 4, 2026.

Following the legislative action, Nixon staged a five-hour sit-in outside Governor DeSantis' office at the Florida Capitol in May 2026. She and two other protesters were arrested. Nixon stated in a video interview, "It cost me nothing to disrupt what was happening." She was formally reprimanded by the Florida House Rules and Ethics Committee.

Nixon, who is 42 years old and a native of Jacksonville, represents Florida's 13th House District. She stated, "A lot of [voters] want someone who's going to fight back and not just give strongly-worded debates and speeches or write strongly-worded emails or letters to the editor." She added, "They want someone that they know is going to fight for them and actually bring forth good ideas on how we can build a new vision for our country, one where hardworking everyday people get to shape what our communities look like and what our economies look like."

Florida State Representative Yvonne Hinson spoke about Nixon's actions, stating, "She's looking for a way to try and get the opposition to understand what they're doing to people, and she's willing to go beyond decorum. What good is decorum?" Hinson also noted, "What we're witnessing in real time is a willingness on both sides to compromise not only our Constitution, our constitutional rights, [but also] the freedoms we've come to learn, our patriotism."

Nixon and former Florida State Representative Travaris McCurdy led a House floor sit-in in 2022 to disrupt debate on Black American representation in the redistricting process. McCurdy described Nixon's approach, stating, "On the campaign trail, I hear her often say we have nothing to lose but our chains, and our chains are oppression, our chains are the political games that people in power are playing."
