BAGHDAD — Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a post on X/Twitter on July 7, 2026, that "negotiations on a final deal will not commence" if threats by the United States continue. This statement followed remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump in an interview on July 6, 2026.

In the interview, Trump stated, "We're going to make a deal, or we're going to finish the job." He added, "It won't be tough to finish the job. I'd rather make a deal, because I don't want to affect 91 million people... We can knock out their electricity and power-generating plants, I would say in the small part of an afternoon. Every plant will be gone, and they know that."

Araghchi also posted, "Honor your signature." He wrote, "Millions of proud Iranians rallied in unity to honor Grand Ayatollah Khamenei and his legacy. Neither they nor our Brave Armed Forces are moved by any threats."

The Memorandum of Understanding outlines commitments from both the United States and Iran. Paragraph 13 of this document states that both nations are committed to implementing a ceasefire, lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, waiving sanctions, and unfreezing restricted assets. This same paragraph specifies that negotiations regarding a final deal will start exclusively on the other paragraphs of the memorandum.

An Iranian military spokesman stated, "We have already stated many times that we are on full alert. We took advantage of the ceasefire period to improve our operational capabilities, updated our target bank, and if the enemy commits any act of aggression or violation of sovereignty, it will certainly receive a more overwhelming response than it has received in the past, and one that will make it regret it more than ever." Additionally, crowds at Ali Khamenei's funeral chanted slogans such as, "Our slogan is one word: Revenge, revenge," and "We will kill, we will kill he who killed our Imam."
