BISHKEK — A court in Bishkek sentenced Kamchybek Tashiev to three years of supervised probation on July 2, 2024, after finding him guilty of preparing a coup attempt under Article 326 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The judge replaced a four-year prison sentence with the probation term, and Tashiev was acquitted on charges of abuse of office.

Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu and Kurmankul Zulushev were also found guilty of a coup attempt, along with five other defendants. The five defendants who had been in custody were released immediately following the verdict. The court stated that the established charge was preparation for a coup attempt, not a completed crime, and cited the personalities of the accused and their potential for rehabilitation as reasons for imposing probation instead of imprisonment. Tashiev did not serve any time in detention throughout the process.

The trial began in mid-May 2024 and was initially closed to the public. It was opened to the public in mid-June 2024 at the request of the defendants. During the trial, Tashiev shouted down a witness in view of the media, after which the proceedings were re-classified as closed.

The case is connected to an appeal signed by 75 public figures that urged President Sadyr Japarov to call for an early presidential election. Tashiev was dismissed from his role as head of the State Committee for National Security in February 2024, two days after the letter began circulating. He had served in that position from May 2021 until his dismissal. Following the verdict, Tashiev attended a Kyrgyz Premier League match between Muras United and Asiagol at Kurmanbek Stadium in Manas. Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu is a former Speaker of the Zhogorku Kenesh, and Kurmankul Zulushev is a former Member of Parliament.
