CASTROVILLE — A fatal crash occurred on U.S. Highway 90 near Tondre Parkway in Castroville, Texas, on Sunday, July 5, 2026. A female passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash died.

Castroville police are conducting tests to determine if the driver of the vehicle that rear-ended the woman's car was intoxicated. A Castroville police spokesman stated on Monday, July 6, 2026, that receiving test results could take a few days.

The crash did not appear to be related to the ongoing road construction project in the area, according to a Castroville police spokesman. The roadwork on U.S. Highway 90 includes new turnaround lanes and traffic patterns.

Resident Ceci Gaitan commented on the traffic changes. "The area where the accident happened, it's a little confusing even to us that live here," Gaitan said. She expressed concern for her children who are learning to drive. "I have girls that are learning how to drive, so I'm scared for them to get on this road," Gaitan said.

Resident Darrel Papoff indicated that all traffic changes on the road are clearly marked and stated there was no confusion regarding the changes. Papoff also noted driver impatience with traffic signals. "People don't want to sit there and wait (at the light)," Papoff said. He added, "That's what wrong with people. They think the laws are not made for everybody, and they have their own versions of them."
