Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated nine fatal traffic crashes during the 2026 Independence Day holiday travel period, which concluded on July 5. Three additional fatal traffic crashes were investigated by local law enforcement agencies, bringing the statewide total to 12 traffic-related deaths.

The Atlanta Police Department, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office each reported fatal crashes during this period. The holiday travel period commenced at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 5.

In total, Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated more than 295 traffic crashes across the state. Fifteen of these crashes involved commercial motor vehicles. Traffic incidents in Georgia during this timeframe resulted in over 180 injuries.

Enforcement efforts by Georgia State Patrol troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers included conducting 20,208 traffic stops. These stops led to the issuance of 10,806 citations and 14,657 warnings. Officers also made 425 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI).

Additionally, 1,099 individuals were cited for seatbelt violations, and 235 individuals received citations for child restraint violations. Officials stated that these crash statistics represent preliminary findings and are subject to change following the holiday travel period's conclusion.
