Multiple candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) secured victories in congressional and state-level primary elections across the United States. These wins include defeats of incumbent politicians in New York City and gains in Wisconsin.

Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez each won congressional elections in New York City. Ms. Chevalier defeated incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat among Black voters. Ms. Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso among majority-Hispanic precincts.

Additional congressional election victories include Chris Rabb in Philadelphia and Melat Kiros in Denver. Democratic socialists also won state legislative primaries in Georgia and Kentucky during the current election cycle. The New York City DSA held a "Tax the Rich" rally in Manhattan on November 16, 2025.

Since 2018, 305 DSA-backed lawmakers have won their respective races. The DSA has been involved in backing and recruiting candidates in down-ballot races across the U.S. for the past decade, and has elected mayors, city councilors, state lawmakers, and other local officials in 39 states. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that socialist victories in New York were concentrated in "higher-income districts" with an "outsized focus on issues connected to the Middle East."

Wisconsin has seen a rise in socialist representation, with Darrin Madison and Ryan Clancy winning election to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2022. They founded the Socialist Caucus in the Wisconsin State Assembly after taking their oaths of office. Last year, Francesca Hong and Christian Phelps joined the Wisconsin Socialist Caucus, doubling its size to four members.

The city of Milwaukee has historical ties to socialist politics, sending the first socialist to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1910 and electing three socialist mayors between 1910 and 1960. Frank Zeidler, elected Milwaukee mayor in 1948, was the last socialist elected in Milwaukee until 2020, when voters elected Ryan Clancy to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors.

Why It Matters

The recent primary election successes for candidates supported by the Democratic Socialists of America indicate an expansion of the organization's influence in American politics. The DSA, which is the largest socialist organization in the U.S. and operates decentralized chapters, has achieved electoral victories across various levels of government, including in states like Ohio, North Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee. This trend follows a period where the DSA has consistently backed candidates in numerous races, culminating in wins in the current election cycle and over 300 victories since 2018. Looking ahead, democratic socialists are also slated to appear on ballots in upcoming primary races in Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
