CARMARTHEN — David Young, a throat cancer patient from Carmarthen, raised funds to purchase five smart TVs and mirrors for head and neck cancer patients on Merlin Ward at Glangwili Hospital. This initiative followed his recovery from an emergency tracheostomy in 2024.

Young received a diagnosis of throat cancer in April 2024. Following an appointment with the Ear, Nose and Throat team, he underwent an emergency tracheostomy. He spent approximately four to five weeks recovering on Merlin Ward at Glangwili Hospital.

"After what I thought would be a routine appointment with the Ear, Nose and Throat team, I was rushed to theatre for an emergency tracheostomy," Young said. "I was then admitted to Merlin Ward for my recovery. I spent about four to five weeks on the ward. Although it was all very frightening and scary, the staff were so supportive, friendly and kind."

He expressed gratitude for the hospital staff. "Every member of staff was so accommodating, from the cleaning staff to the ward sister. I will be forever grateful for the way they supported not just me, but my wife also. They truly went above and beyond."

The fundraiser took place at South Caravan Park in Tavernspite. "A fun night was had by all, with entertainment, a raffle and an auction," he said. Young also thanked Charles and Sophie James, KT, Jess, Amy, Lucy and all the bar staff for their time, effort and support.

Claire Rumble, a fundraising officer, expressed appreciation for Young's efforts. "We are incredibly grateful to David for organising such a thoughtful fundraiser following his experience," Rumble said. She also noted that charitable donations are used to provide items and activities exceeding core NHS expenditure rather than replacing NHS funding itself.
