A 2026 analysis and survey data indicate that Generation Z in the United States is experiencing financial nihilism, diminished well-being, and political distrust. This is attributed to economic barriers and disillusionment with traditional markers of success.
Over 70% of Gen Z respondents reported that "survival spending" is their financial norm. Additionally, 57% of those surveyed believe their generation was financially disadvantaged, and only 32% think the American Dream remains attainable. Kaelyn, a 24-year-old born in 2002, described a common sentiment among her age group, stating, "Everywhere I turn — healthcare, employment, even housing — those who provide the 'opportunities' are exploitative and slowly but surely drilling further into a broken system." She added, "This is a common mentality I've seen among my age group."
This sentiment coincides with shifts in the job market and economic landscape. A SignalFire analysis of hiring data from 2019 to 2024 revealed that entry-level hiring decreased by more than 50% across all sectors, while mid- and senior-level hiring recovered during the same period. Kaelyn noted that her generation became jaded about employment before entering the workforce, saying, "We were jaded about employment before we ever entered the workforce." In 2026, 60% of companies reported terminating Gen Z hires within the initial months of employment, citing a lack of motivation.
Economists David Blanchflower of Dartmouth and Alex Bryson of UCL have documented the disappearance of the U-curve of happiness over two years. This pattern previously indicated that happiness declined in middle age and later improved. Their findings suggest that young people are now the most unhappy demographic globally, with working papers from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) by Blanchflower and Bryson stating this deterioration in well-being began in 2010.
The oldest members of Gen Z were between 8 and 13 years old during the 2008-2010 foreclosure crisis, which displaced 3.8 million American families. Since 2019, starter home prices have risen by 87%. The average price for a new car is $49,000, representing a 27% increase from 2020 levels. Kaelyn, who works as an administrator at a high-volume tax firm and is pursuing an enrolled agent certification, and her partner obtained GEDs, skipped college, lived with family until age 21, and managed to buy a home after saving.
Political distrust is also noted among Gen Z, with 18% stating they never trust the government. Furthermore, 14.5% of Gen Z identify as ideologically "extreme." This contrasts with 2.7% of Millennials who described themselves as ideologically "extreme" when they were the same age.
Why It Matters
This data indicates a shift in the financial outlook and emotional well-being of Generation Z in the United States, suggesting a departure from previous generational experiences regarding economic opportunity and social trust. The findings from the World Economic Forum use the term "financial nihilism" to describe a belief that the system no longer rewards prudence, highlighting a potential long-term impact on economic participation and societal engagement. These trends suggest a need to examine the systemic economic barriers and the evolving expectations of younger generations, as these factors could influence future workforce dynamics and political landscapes.
