US METRO AREAS — Waymo announced a strategic partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation in April 2025 to explore integrating its autonomous driving technology into personally-owned vehicles. The collaboration marks an expansion beyond Waymo's current robotaxi service into the consumer vehicle market.

The autonomous vehicle company currently operates a commercial robotaxi service in 10 U.S. metro areas and provides 500,000 paid rides per week. Waymo has previously said it is exploring commercial opportunities beyond ride-hailing, including licensing its technology to other automakers.

"There's ride-hailing, and you can take a ride through the Waymo app today. Eventually, that'll be on your personal car. So that I see," said Dmitri Dolgov, co-CEO of Waymo.

"Through this new collaboration, the companies aim to further accelerate the development and adoption of driver assistance and automated driving technologies for POVs, with a continued focus on safety and peace of mind," the companies said at the time.

"The technology is solved. But then, if you're in the middle of nowhere and there's just not enough density of the trips, does it make sense for the ride-hailing service that Waymo is running to have cars on standby? Probably not," Dolgov said.

Waymo lists other U.S. cities and cities abroad as targets for future deployments. The partnership represents Waymo's latest move to expand its autonomous driving technology beyond its current ride-hailing operations into new market segments.
