JUBA — Gunmen killed more than 70 people near Juba, South Sudan, during a dispute at a gold mining site over the weekend. The attack occurred at the Jebel Iraq gold mining site located in Central Equatoria State.

"All I know is that unknown gunmen attacked Jebel Iraq at a gold mine. There are more than 70 dead and many more injured," said Kwacijwok Dominic Amondoc, a police spokesperson. Amondoc said he would share more information about the attack once he receives more details.

A video shared online showed dozens of bodies at an open ground. A local journalist said many victims fled into nearby bushes after the attack.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army – In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) condemned the attack and blamed government forces.

The gold mining site at Jebel Iraq is located in Central Equatoria State near Juba. In the past, the site had been the location of violent clashes between illegal miners and mining companies.
