COLUMBUS — The Columbus Division of Police is searching for Michael Magyar after officers and Magyar exchanged gunfire on July 4. The incident occurred on the South Side after police responded to a report of Magyar assaulting a woman.

Officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Cotton Mill Street at approximately 12:33 p.m. on July 4. They were responding to a report that Magyar was assaulting a woman in a nearby homeless encampment. Another call was received stating that Magyar had a gun before officers arrived at the scene.

When officers located Magyar and the woman, Magyar fled toward nearby woods. The woman informed the officers that Magyar possessed a gun. During the encounter, Magyar raised a gun at officers, and both Magyar and officers fired shots.

After the exchange of gunfire, Magyar fled into a wooded area. No officers sustained injuries during the incident. Police have secured an arrest warrant for felonious assault for Magyar. The search for Magyar remained ongoing as of 9:50 a.m. on July 5.

It is unclear whether Magyar was injured during the exchange. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. Police described Magyar, also known as "Machete Mike," as a 41-year-old, 6-foot-2, thin white male with thinning brown hair. He was last seen wearing no shirt and black shorts.

Magyar has a tattoo above the left corner of his lip, a cross tattooed on the back of his neck, and tattoos on both biceps. Court records indicate that Magyar had been released on his own recognizance from the James A. Karnes Corrections Center three days before the shooting. He was arrested on June 10 on charges of aggravated menacing and assault.

The Columbus Division of Police continues to urge anyone with information regarding Magyar's whereabouts to contact investigators as the manhunt proceeds.
