GRAND JUNCTION — Three firefighters, Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson, died on June 27, 2026, after wildfires in Mesa County, Colorado, overtook them. The firefighters were part of a Helitack crew deployment when they were overcome by flames.

During the incident, two other firefighters sustained burn injuries. The crew had deployed emergency protective shelters in an attempt to protect themselves from the fast-moving fires. Barker was 38 years old. Hutcherson and Watson were 27.

Barker was from Clinton, Michigan. Sarah Brubeck Schnurbusch, a friend and former roommate of Barker, stated, "I've never seen someone so excited to go to work." Schnurbusch added, "I just hope that Emily knows the impact that she left on everybody else, and how many people really truly love her."

Hutcherson was from Glendale, Arizona, and had served in the U.S. Navy. He trained at Southside Combat Academy in Flagstaff. Watson was from Warrior, Alabama. She was a former pitcher on the softball team at the University of Tennessee Southern, from which she also graduated. She was assigned to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service Rifle Helitack crew.

In 2023, Watson participated in a program in North Carolina organized by the Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchanges, a collaborative group. The group stated, "It's hard for people outside of the firefighting world to understand why we do what we do. We do it because we love it. Sydney loved it."

A memorial service for the three firefighters is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at the Las Colonias Park Amphitheater in Grand Junction, Colorado.
