Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called on the United States to continue its support for Beirut following a Washington-mediated agreement between Lebanon and Israel. President Aoun issued the appeal on July 4, 2026, the same day he sent a congratulatory message to U.S. President Donald Trump for the 250th Independence Day of the United States.

President Aoun stated, "Keep always standing beside Lebanon's right and just causes, its institutions, army and people." He expressed hope that Lebanon could "turn the page on wars … and open a new page of hope, peace and stability." The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon posted on X that it stands with the people of Lebanon as they forge a future of peace, prosperity, and promise.

Israel and Lebanon signed a U.S.-backed framework deal on June 27, 2026, aimed at a permanent end to the conflict with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. This agreement includes provisions for the disarmament of Hezbollah, a gradual Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the area. The Lebanese army's deployment is set to begin in two pilot areas, but the agreement does not specify a timetable for an Israeli withdrawal.

Hezbollah rejected the deal. Prior to the agreement, Hezbollah initiated rocket fire at Israel on March 2, 2026, in what it stated was an act to avenge the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Israel launched an intense campaign of airstrikes and a ground invasion in southern Lebanon, with Israeli forces occupying swaths of territory.

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported on June 20, 2026, that the death toll since March 2 had reached 4,303 killed and 12,202 wounded. On the same day, the National News Agency reported that an Israeli Apache helicopter fired five missiles towards the town of Majdal Zoun. The National News Agency also reported that one person was injured following an Israeli strike on the village of al-Mansouri.

Social Affairs Minister Haneen Sayed visited southern Lebanon, including the city of Nabatieh, on June 20, 2026. Sayed indicated that authorities were developing a plan involving prefabricated houses and rent assistance payments. She said this plan aims to help displaced individuals return home or relocate to nearby areas. Sayed added that 400,000 displaced people have already returned to their areas in southern Lebanon.
