SEARSMONT — Alden J. Robbins, a co-owner of Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, Maine, died on July 2, 2026, from injuries sustained in a fire and explosion at the facility on May 15, 2026. His death brings the total number of fatalities from the incident to three.

Maine Governor Janet Mills and the Robbins family confirmed Robbins' death on July 3, 2026. The Maine Department of Public Safety released a statement on behalf of the Robbins family stating that Alden Robbins passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

Authorities stated the fire was accidental and originated at the base of a silo. The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office stated that rapid ignition of particulate material resulted in an explosion in the silo. The explosion caused the silo to lift from its concrete base and release large amounts of sawdust and other materials. The silo toppled, and the surrounding area became engulfed in fire.

Two firefighters died from injuries sustained while fighting the blaze, which hundreds of firefighters responded to. Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury, 76, and Andrew Cross, 27, of the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department, both died from their injuries. In addition to the fatalities, ten people were injured in the incident, including Lily Robbins, Alden Robbins' daughter.

Medical teams at Maine Medical Center in Portland and the Sumner Redstone Burn Center at Massachusetts General Hospital treated Alden Robbins. Governor Mills described Alden Robbins as a leader in Maine's lumber industry for decades. The Robbins family commented, "Alden was the heart of our family in so many ways, and nothing mattered more to him than the people he loved." They added, "Throughout his battle, he fought with extraordinary courage and determination, holding on so that his family could have precious time with him."

Alden Robbins was married to Amy Robbins, and they had six children. His father, James Robbins, is the former president of Robbins Lumber. Governor Mills offered condolences, stating, "My heart is with his family, including his father and former company President James Robbins, Alden's wife, Amy, and their six children." Mills said, "I ask Maine people to join me in keeping the Robbins family and all impacted by this tragedy in their hearts and in their prayers during this difficult time." The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
