DETROIT — General Motors sold approximately 14,000 Chevrolet Silverado EVs in the U.S. and Canada last year. The electric truck travels over 400 miles on a charge.
The Silverado EV has a 205 kilowatt-hour battery pack located midships. In testing, the vehicle achieved an efficiency of approximately 2.1 miles per kilowatt-hour. The fossil fuel-powered Chevrolet Silverado sells 10 times the volume of the EV version in a quarter.
The Silverado EV LT Extended Range has a list price of $71,000 and offers a range of 410 miles on a full charge. The Silverado EV LT Max Range costs $20,000 more and provides a range of 478 miles. The average price paid for a full-size pickup truck is $66,000.
The Silverado EV is almost 20 feet long and features four doors. It includes a short bed that can be extended into the cabin, and a stylistic element called a 'sail' between the cabin and the bed. The vehicle also has rear-wheel steering.
Inside, the Silverado EV uses a Google-powered infotainment system and includes physical volume and temperature knobs. General Motors removed Apple CarPlay from its electric vehicles. The navigation system displays an estimate of how long the driver can use Super Cruise, a Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system.
The towing range of the Silverado EV is 60% shorter than its standard driving range. Approximately 75% of full-size truck owners tow at most once per year. General Motors has indicated the Silverado EV will incorporate a lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) battery chemistry, which is expected to reduce costs by approximately $6,000.
