WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two U.S. Representatives disclosed stock purchases in SpaceX shortly after the company's initial public offering in June 2025. These disclosures include a purchase by a dependent child of one representative and a separate purchase by another representative.

Representative Dan Meuser's dependent child purchased between $15,001 and $50,000 of SpaceX stock on June 15, according to House financial documents. Representative Gil Cisneros disclosed a purchase of between $1,001 and $15,000 in SpaceX stock on June 18, as indicated by House financial documents.

SpaceX went public on June 12, 2025, raising approximately $75 billion in its initial public offering. Shares opened at $150 and closed at $162 on Thursday. The stock closed roughly 20% below its June 16 closing high of $201.80.

Representative Meuser serves on the House Financial Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over securities and exchanges. Representative Cisneros is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, which oversees the Defense Department. In 2021, President Joe Biden appointed Cisneros to serve as the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness.

"My wife and I have always employed outside financial advisors who have a fiduciary responsibility to maintain a diverse portfolio. We do not manage the day-to-day trading of our investment portfolio, nor have we ever suggested a trade while serving in Congress or at the Department of Defense," Cisneros said. "Additionally, while serving in both the executive and legislative branches of the government, I have always complied with all rules and regulations regarding stock trading and financial disclosures. I will also continue to advocate for more ethics oversight of federally elected and politically appointed officials in regard to their financial portfolios," he said.

The STOCK Act mandates that lawmakers disclose financial transactions made by themselves, their spouses, and dependent children. A Senate proposal to ban congressional stock trading advanced out of committee in July 2025.

Why It Matters

The disclosures of stock purchases by members of Congress or their immediate families in companies related to their oversight responsibilities often draw attention. Representative Meuser's role on the House Financial Services Committee, which oversees financial markets, and Representative Cisneros's position on the House Armed Services Committee and prior role in the Department of Defense, are relevant because SpaceX is a company involved in sectors that can be influenced by legislative and executive decisions. The STOCK Act requires transparency regarding such financial activities, providing public access to these transactions.
