New York ranked 49th out of 50 states for patriotism in a WalletHub study released on May 18, 2026. The state received an overall patriotism score of 28.96 out of a possible 100.

The study indicated that New York ranked No. 49 for military engagement and No. 45 for civic engagement. New York has the fewest veterans per capita compared to all other states.

Military engagement indicators included the average number of military enlistees per 1,000 civilian adults between 2017 and 2022, veterans per 1,000 civilian adults, active-duty military personnel per 100,000 civilian adults, and the share of the civilian adult population in military reserves. Alaska ranked first among all states for veterans per capita, possessing three times more veterans per capita than New York.

Civic engagement indicators included the share of adults who voted in the 2024 Presidential Election and the 2020 Primary Elections. Other factors in civic engagement were volunteer rate, volunteer hours per resident, AmeriCorps volunteers per capita, Peace Corps volunteers per capita, trial and grand jury participation per civilian adult population, the share of residents participating in any groups, organizations, or associations in the past year, and civics education requirements.

WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo stated, "The most patriotic states have a lot of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, high voter turnouts during elections, and a high share of the population volunteering." The WalletHub study compared all 50 states across 13 indicators of patriotism.

Arkansas ranked 50th for patriotism with a score of 28.23. Louisiana followed at 48th with a score of 32.83, and Alabama at 47th with 34.45. Florida was 46th with 36.19 and Texas 45th with a score of 37.53.

Indiana ranked 44th with a score of 37.74, New Jersey 43rd with 38.46, Rhode Island 42nd with 38.75, and West Virginia 41st with a score of 39.48. Virginia ranked 1st for patriotism with a score of 70.07. Montana followed at 2nd with 67.90, Vermont at 3rd with 66.56, Colorado at 4th with 64.46, and Oregon at 5th with 62.46.

North Dakota ranked 6th with a score of 60.63, Washington 7th with 60.27, Maryland 8th with 59.92, Minnesota 9th with 58.66, and New Hampshire 10th with a score of 57.64. Data for the ranking was collected as of May 18, 2026.
