WESTERN IRAN — Iranian forces conducted drone attacks on a base of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Erbil's Degala sub-district on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Separately, Iranian forces killed five Kurdish fighters in an ambush in western Iran, and three Iranian security personnel died in a clash at the Baneh checkpoint on the same day.

Two drones targeted the KDPI base, according to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran. The opposition party told Rudaw, "At that time, no Peshmerga were present at the targeted location, which is why the attack resulted in no casualties." Rudaw reported that the Kurdistan Region has been hit by at least 865 drones and missiles since late February, with nearly 20 drones targeting refugee camps and the headquarters of Iranian Kurdish parties across the region in the past month.

The KDPI stated that five of its fighters were killed during clashes in the Ghezqapan area near Piranshahr city. Iranian media reported heavy clashes in the Piranshahr and Sardasht areas between forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) Hamza Sayyid Al Shuhada and Kurdish fighters.

In a separate incident on July 1, 2026, Afshin Fatahi, a member of the Iranian security forces, died from injuries sustained in an armed clash at the Baneh checkpoint. The Hengaw human rights organization reported, "Afshin Fatahi, a member of Iran's Law Enforcement Command (Faraja) from Bijar, died from his injuries on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, in Sanandaj after receiving treatment for wounds sustained in the clash at the Baneh checkpoint." Hengaw added, "Fatahi's death brings the number of Iranian security forces members killed in the clash to three." The organization also stated, "Those killed have been identified as Afshin Fatahi of Bijar and Mohammad Hossein Beigi of Qorveh, both members of Faraja, and Mardin Ahmadi, a conscript soldier from Saqqez."
