SYDNEY — Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has named the team for the Nations Championship opener against Australia, scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Sydney. Dan Sheehan will lead the team as captain, a change necessitated by the injury of Caelan Doris. There are five uncapped players included in the squad.

Jamie Osborne was selected to play on the left wing. "Obviously, he's been playing really well. He's a bloody good rugby player in whatever position he's playing in," Farrell said. "With how we want to play the game with having our wingers involved, he's a smart player. He gets that straightaway. Pretty good in the air, good left boot, that all comes into the pot."

Brothers Sam and Cian Prendergast are both set to start in the match. "Cian has come a long way in the past 12 months. The learnings he took from the autumn into the start of the Six Nations and how that progressed, I think he's been outstanding for Connacht," Farrell said. Regarding Sam, Farrell said, "Sam, the way he's handled the last month is a credit to him in regards to taking responsibility for the shirt and his chance to build through the last few games and finish with a big performance in the final (for Leinster), so he's earned the right."

Among the other uncapped players joining the squad are Billy Bohan, Sam Illo, Sean Jansen, Zac Ward, and Bryn Ward. Billy Bohan, 20, from Kildare, recently signed a three-year senior contract with Connacht. Sam Illo made his Connacht debut in January 2022. Sean Jansen, born in New Zealand, plays number eight for Connacht, scored 12 tries, and ranked third in URC tackles with 219 this season. Brothers Zac and Bryn Ward both play for Ulster, with Zac Ward scoring 15 tries this season.

Several players are unavailable due to injury, including Jack Crowley, who has a blood vessel issue in his leg. Other injured players include Andrew Porter, Paddy McCarthy, Jack Boyle, Ryan Baird, Edwin Edogbo, Tommy O'Brien, and Mack Hansen. James Lowe has departed Leinster and Irish rugby to play in Japan.

Why It Matters

The upcoming Nations Championship opener marks a new phase for the Ireland rugby team under head coach Andy Farrell, who recently signed a contract extension until 2031. The selection of Dan Sheehan as captain and the inclusion of five uncapped players indicate a shift in the team's composition as it addresses key player absences due to injuries. The match against Australia in Sydney will provide an early test for this rebuilt squad and its new leadership.

The integration of new talent, particularly brothers Sam and Cian Prendergast in starting roles, reflects the team's strategic development. Prior to the World Cup quarter-finals, Ireland had a 17-Test winning streak, which included a Grand Slam. The team also won a Test series in New Zealand 2-1 in 2022, securing victories in Dunedin and Wellington. This match allows the new lineup to establish momentum following a Six Nations campaign that saw Ireland achieve four wins and one defeat against France preceding this championship.
