FLORIDA — Organizers of the Barbie Dream Fest weekend in Florida are issuing refunds to attendees after customers complained the event did not meet expectations. Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand, said full refunds would be given to everyone who purchased tickets.
The creators of Barbie Dream Fest advertised a roller rink and disco. Ticketholders paid up to $450 for the event, with a day pass costing $72 for adults and $33 for children. A three-day pass for the event cost up to $250 and included a swag bag comprised of a plastic pouch with Barbie hand sanitizer.
Photos of the event show a grey convention center space with pink cardboard cut-out Barbie signs.
"Barbie Dream Fest was created by Mischief Management, which licensed the Barbie brand from Mattel," a Mattel spokesperson said. "We are working with Mischief Management, who are managing attendee feedback and issuing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets."
Michael Gorey, an attendee, expressed confusion about the event. "Is this it? Did I miss something?" he said.
A burlesque group that attended the event said they had expected more based on what was advertised through the event's social media channels. The group said that many experiences at the convention were height restricted and intended for children up to eight years old.
"We will be providing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets," a Mischief Management spokesperson said. "Barbie Dream Fest was created as an intimate fan convention designed to foster meaningful connection, inspiration, and closer access to Barbie and her world."
