GLASBURY, POWYS — An 18-year-old male student drowned in the River Wye in Glasbury, Powys, while participating in a Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition. Emergency services responded to a report that the teenager had entered the water and could not be found.

The body of the male was located following a search operation. Dyfed-Powys police confirmed that a multi-agency operation was initiated at the River Wye after officers received a report at 6:30 p.m.

A Duke of Edinburgh's Award spokeswoman confirmed the college student was on a DofE expedition when the event occurred. "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a young person has drowned while on a DofE expedition in Powys, Wales," the spokeswoman said. "Our thoughts are with the young person's family, together with all those who were taking part. We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time."

The spokeswoman added that the organization is collaborating with the college the student attended and relevant authorities. "DofE is liaising closely with the young person's college and relevant authorities to understand how this tragic incident happened," she said. "We are offering our full support."

A Dyfed-Powys police spokesperson indicated that during the search, various agencies were involved. "Dyfed-Powys police, Mid and West Wales fire and rescue service, Mountain Rescue and the National Police Air Service have searched the area since the report was made at 6.30pm," the spokesperson said. "Sadly, the body of a male has been located."

The police spokesperson extended thoughts to the family and loved ones of the deceased. "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time," the spokesperson said. Officers requested that the public stay away from the area while inquiries continue. "Emergency services remain in the area and ask that members of the public stay away while inquiries continue," the spokesperson said.
