LOS ANGELES — Stand-up comedian and actor Alex Duong died Sunday in a Los Angeles hospital after a battle with cancer, according to a GoFundMe update. The 42-year-old performer passed away surrounded by friends and family.

"With the heaviest hearts, we share that our dear Alex passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by love and dear friends. He was comfortable and thankfully out of pain," Hilarie Steele wrote in the GoFundMe update. The fundraising page, which Steele started in February 2025 to support Duong and his family during treatment, announced his death to supporters.

Duong had been diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in 2025, a rare and aggressive form of soft-tissue cancer. The diagnosis came after he experienced a headache and bulging of his left eye at the beginning of that year.

Before his death, Duong went into septic shock on Friday and was in critical condition at the hospital. "They were able to see him last night, and he was alert enough to say goodbye to his little girl, whom he has treasured every moment since the day she was born," she said in the update.

Duong leaves behind his wife Christina, whom he had been married to for seven years, and their five-year-old daughter Everest. "We are devastated, but so grateful for the support, prayers, and generosity you have all shown during this unimaginable time," Steele added in the announcement.

The actor played Sonny Le in the television series Blue Bloods from 2021 to 2024. His television credits also included Pretty Little Liars, The Young and the Restless, 90210, Everybody Hates Chris, Mad TV, Dexter, Interns Anonymous, and Death Valley. His film credits include Formosa Betrayed, Ghetto Physics, The Beyond, and Sideways for Attention.

In August 2025, the Largo in Los Angeles hosted "The Alex Duong Has Cancer In His Eye Comedy Benefit Show" featuring comedians Ronny Chieng, Andrea Jin, and Atsuko Okatsuka. By the Sunday following his death, the family had reached the original fundraising goal through the GoFundMe campaign.

According to the American Cancer Society, rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft-tissue cancer most common in children, and the alveolar type affects all ages equally. After a biopsy, doctors labeled the tumor blocking blood flow to Duong's optic nerve as "extremely aggressive."
