ABU TIG — A motorized tricycle carrying children returning from farm work overturned and plunged into a canal in Abu Tig, Egypt, killing nine children and injuring two others. Local media reports indicated that a steering malfunction caused the tricycle to overturn while transporting the children home from nearby farms. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Abu Tig Hospital.

Gamal Suleiman, an uncle of one of the victims, stated that his nephew was among the nine who died. "My nephew is one of the nine who died. They are people below zero, they have nothing, and they work on farmland for one hundred pounds a day and they spend on their homes (these children)," Suleiman said. Cairo 24 reported that the ages of the children ranged from 10 to 17 years old.

The Assiut governor's office released a statement on Facebook concerning the incident, and photos posted by the office showed individuals in divers' gear searching the water. Mohamed Elwan, Assiut's governor, mandated that authorities implement safety measures, including installing concrete barriers along the canal's sides. Abu Tig is situated in the province of Assiut, which is located 320 kilometers south of Cairo.
