HOUSTON, TEXAS — Airbnb is activating enhanced artificial intelligence-powered anti-party technology nationwide on June 30, 2026, to identify and block high-risk bookings before confirmation. This expansion follows a fatal shooting at an unauthorized party in Houston's Third Ward in May 2026.

Three individuals were shot during a party at a short-term rental home on Dickens Road that month. The victims were transported to the hospital, and suspects fled the scene prior to the arrival of Houston Police Department officers. Airbnb says its enhanced screening technology uses artificial intelligence and other risk factors to detect bookings that may be associated with unauthorized parties.

In 2025, Airbnb prevented over 20,000 potentially high-risk bookings during the Fourth of July holiday. Approximately 580 of these bookings were prevented in Houston during the same period. Tomaro Bell, President of the MacGregor Super Neighborhood, asked, "Who would rent to children?" He added, "To have that many children unsupervised in a house is irresponsible." Bell also stated, "We are having tremendous problems," and described situations where people were "literally blocking people in their driveway."

Imari Mora, a short-term rental host in Houston, expressed support for the new technology saying, "I think it's a really good idea." Mora added, "As a host, I feel like it makes me feel protected." She also noted, "At the end of the day, Airbnb can flag the message, but it's really the hosts who have to... we're most concerned about our property [and] our guest safety." Houston's short-term rental ordinance requires properties to be registered with the city. Bell commented on this ordinance, stating, "The city has put in an ordinance. I'm just hoping they have the enforcement."
