ASADABAD, KUNAR PROVINCE — The Afghan government accused the Pakistani military of shelling the outskirts of Asadabad in Kunar Province on Sunday. Mortars and other heavy weaponry were used Sunday afternoon to strike rural areas and civilian homes on the outskirts of Asadabad in Kunar Province, a government spokesman said.

Preliminary figures indicated that one person was killed and 16 others were wounded, mostly women and children, a government spokesman said. Pakistan did not immediately respond to the accusations.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar mediated a temporary truce between Afghanistan and Pakistan last week before Eid al-Fitr. The temporary truce expired and renewed fighting erupted on Wednesday.

The fighting between Afghanistan and Pakistan has included repeated cross-border clashes and airstrikes inside Afghanistan, including several in Kabul. Last month, the Pakistani government declared that it was in open war with Afghanistan, the government said.

The Afghan government said a Pakistani airstrike hit a drug treatment hospital in Kabul earlier this month, killing more than 400 people, the government said. The Pakistani government disputed the claim and denied targeting civilians, saying it struck an ammunition depot, the government said. The U.N. humanitarian affairs office said the total death toll is still under verification.

The Afghan government said Pakistani airstrikes on border areas killed only civilians, the government said.
