ANNAPOLIS — Governor Wes Moore declared a State of Preparedness for Maryland on June 30, 2026. The declaration is in effect from Wednesday, July 1, through Sunday, July 5, 2026, as the state anticipates an extreme heat event.

This declaration enables state agencies to coordinate resources and emergency planning efforts. The Maryland Department of Emergency Management will oversee statewide coordination with local governments and partner organizations, though the declaration does not escalate to a State of Emergency.

The National Weather Service forecasts daytime temperatures reaching the mid-90s across the state during this period. Some localized areas may experience temperatures of 100 degrees or higher, with heat index values predicted to range between 105 and 110 degrees. The heat index has the potential to peak near 115 degrees.

The hottest conditions are expected from Thursday through Saturday. Overnight temperatures are also anticipated to remain above 80 degrees throughout much of Maryland. Health officials stated that the combination of prolonged heat and high humidity increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Health officials identified several groups at increased risk during the heat event, including individuals working outdoors, those participating in holiday activities, older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, and pets. State officials reminded workers and employers to be aware of Maryland's workplace heat safety regulations.

Cooling centers are available across Maryland to provide relief. Specific locations in Frederick include the Salvation Army Day Center at 239 Evergreen Place, which operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other cooling centers in Frederick include the Frederick Rescue Mission at 419 W South Street, Housing & Human Services at 100 S Market Street, Beyond Shelter Frederick at 27 Degrange Street, and the C. Burr Artz Public Library at 110 E. Patrick Street.
