MINNESOTA — Six candidates are running in the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District on August 11, 2026. Incumbent Rep. Angie Craig is running for the U.S. Senate rather than seeking another term.

The candidates include Kaela Berg, Matt Klein, Matt Little, Abdisallam Abdulle, Hugh McTavish, and Christopher Mosel. The district includes suburban areas such as Burnsville, Eagan, and Cottage Grove, as well as rural farm areas in Dakota, Scott, and Le Sueur counties.

Craig was first elected in 2018. Republicans represented the district for 20 years prior to her election. Journalist Esme Murphy stated, "It is the most evenly divided district between Democrats and Republicans in the state." Murphy also said, "There are suburban areas, including Burnsville, Eagan and Cottage Grove, as well as rural farm areas in Dakota, Scott and Le Sueur counties."

Berg was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2022. She previously worked as a flight attendant for Endeavor Air and served as director of the Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition. EMILY's List, End Citizens United, and the Association of Flight Attendants have endorsed her campaign. Berg stated, "Kaela is running … to fight for hardworking families because she understands the challenges our community faces firsthand."

Klein was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2016 and served on the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan School District board from 2013 to 2016. He has professional experience as a physician. State Sen. John Hoffman, 314 Action, and the Minnesota Pipe Trades Association have endorsed Klein. Klein said, "Matt has passed laws protecting Minnesotans from financial fraud and predatory lending." He also stated, "He has controlled the rising cost of medications by regulating the pharmaceutical industry."

Little served in the Minnesota Senate from 2017 to 2021, as Mayor of Lakeville from 2013 to 2017, and on the Lakeville City Council from 2011 to 2012. He practices as a lawyer. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota, and National Nurses United have endorsed Little. Little stated, "I grew up in Minnesota's Second Congressional District (MN CD2), from my parents' home in Lakeville to my high school in Rosemount and my home in New Market Township."

Why It Matters

The Democratic primary will determine who represents the party in a general election. As of June 23, 2026, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales, and Larry J. Sabato's Crystal Ball rated the general election as Likely Democratic. Craig has held the seat since 2018, ending a 20-year period of Republican representation.
