Survey Says Liberal Democrats Like Democratic Socialists

The survey examined 8,512 U.S. adults for views on socialist leaders. Liberal Democrats showed 52 percent favorable views while conservative Democrats included 15 percent.

U.S. — A Pew Research Center survey conducted from Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, 2026, found that 32% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say they like political leaders who identify as democratic socialists. The survey indicated that 56% of this group neither like nor dislike such leaders, while 11% dislike them.

The survey included 8,512 U.S. adults. Among liberal Democrats, 52% say they like political leaders who identify as democratic socialists, while 4% dislike them and 43% neither like nor dislike them. In contrast, 15% of conservative and moderate Democrats say they like such leaders, 17% dislike them, and 66% neither like nor dislike them.

Demographic breakdowns within the Democratic and Democratic-leaning independent cohort showed varying levels of support. White Democrats reported 40% favorable views, followed by Asian Democrats at 30%, Black Democrats at 21%, and Hispanic Democrats at 20%. Age also showed differences, with 39% of Democrats aged 18-29 expressing favorable views, and 35% of those aged 30-49 doing the same. Favorable views were 25% among Democrats aged 50-64 and 27% among those 65 and older.

Educational background and income levels correlated with views on democratic socialist leaders. Democrats with a college degree showed a 41% favorable rate, compared to 26% for those without a college degree. Among income groups, 40% of upper-income Democrats, 34% of middle-income Democrats, and 24% of lower-income Democrats expressed favorable opinions.

Engagement with government news also played a role; 44% of Democrats who frequently follow government news reported favorable views, while 18% of those who rarely follow government news expressed similar sentiments. Within specific classifications, 66% of Leftward Progressives and 53% of Loyal Liberals liked political leaders who identify as democratic socialists. These two groups together constitute 35% of Democrats and Democratic leaners.

Across all Americans, 17% overall reported liking political leaders who identify as democratic socialists. The overall American sentiment included 38% who disliked such leaders and 43% who remained neutral.
