CAPE CANAVERAL — Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp announced on Tuesday that the company is investigating the cause of a New Glenn rocket explosion that occurred on May 28, 2026, and outlined plans to rebuild the Cape Canaveral launchpad. Limp stated that the company is working to "identify and correct the root cause" of the explosion, which damaged launch facilities in Florida.
The explosion occurred during testing as the New Glenn rocket was preparing for its fourth flight. While no injuries were reported, the incident destroyed a lightning tower and the transporter-erector, which is used to move and position the rocket. Nearby buildings at the launch site also sustained damage.
Blue Origin does not currently know the cause of the explosion. However, Limp wrote that "Early analysis points to the aft section of the first stage" of the rocket. He noted that the company is utilizing "extensive data from multiple camera angles and sensors" in its investigation.
Blue Origin plans to rebuild its Cape Canaveral launchpad, which is currently its only facility capable of supporting the New Glenn rocket. The rebuilding efforts will include replacing the destroyed transporter-erector with a large crane system. Limp stated that this change is expected to increase New Glenn's flight cadence. Blue Origin had scheduled as many as 12 New Glenn launches for 2026 before the May explosion. The New Glenn rocket's first launch took place in January 2025. Limp also wrote that the company "caught a lot of breaks, too, and intend to make the most of them," noting that the on-site water tower, gas tanks, and rocket integration facility remained undamaged.
