VERO BEACH, FLORIDA — Police are searching for a 64-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting his wife and another man in a library parking lot in Vero Beach, Florida. The suspect has been identified as Jesse Scott Ellis.

Ellis shot and killed his wife, Stacie Ellis Mason, and Danny Ooley, 56, on Tuesday in the parking lot of the Indian River County Main Library. Security video shows Mason and Ooley arriving separately at the parking lot before Mason got into Ooley's car. The video then shows Ellis pulling into the parking lot and firing multiple shots into the vehicle with an automatic weapon.

Immediately after the shooting, Ellis drove to South Beach Park, abandoned his car, entered the ocean fully clothed and swam about 900 yards offshore. Local fire department rescue services personnel drove out to Ellis by boat after receiving a concerned call from a woman on the beach. Rescuers determined that Ellis did not need to be rescued and that he did not know he was a suspect in the killings. Rescuers said Ellis gave officials a different name when approached.

Authorities are searching for Ellis by boat. The Vero Beach Police Department released a photograph of Ellis on a Florida beach taken just hours after he allegedly killed his wife and another man.

Mason and Ooley were Indian River County government employees. Authorities believe the two were having an affair. Ooley was married. Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey described the killings as a targeted marital issue and said that Ellis is not believed to be a threat to the public. He said the killings were a crime of passion related to an alleged affair.

Ellis and his wife had been married for 13 years and had children together. Ellis and his wife were potentially separating or divorcing and preparing to sell their house, Currey said. He said Mason and Ooley had previously met in the library parking lot, though he was not sure how long they had been romantically involved.

Mary Ooley said Danny Ooley was not having an affair and that Mason and Ooley were at the parking lot to check for a job they were going to be doing. Kristi Ellis said authorities told her family that morning about her stepmother Mason's killing and that she had lost her parents and had no family.

Ellis was undergoing professional services in the weeks leading up to the shooting. Multiple firearms were recovered from Ellis's home. He said it is possible that Ellis drowned. Ellis is about 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. "We will get through this," said Deryl Loar, chairman of the Indian River County Commission.
