WASHINGTON D.C. — The U.S. Commerce Department informed Anthropic that export controls on its Mythos AI model would be relaxed. This follows a two-week period during which an export ban on the model forced Anthropic to disable it for all users.

Two weeks ago, the U.S. government imposed export controls on Anthropic's Mythos and Fable models. The controls were implemented after the discovery of a Fable jailbreak that could allow users to circumvent guardrails designed to prevent access to Mythos' full cyber capabilities.

In April, the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk" after the company refused to accept specific contract language the department was insisting upon. President Donald Trump posted on social media that Anthropic consisted of "leftwing nut jobs" who were trying to "strong-arm the Department of War." Trump had previously renamed the Pentagon the Department of War.

Criticism also came from Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, who posted on X that "it's a shame that Dario Amodei is a liar and has a God-complex." During an April Congressional hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei "an ideological lunatic." David Sacks, who holds roles on several government technology advisory committees, has repeatedly accused Anthropic of running a "sophisticated regulatory capture" strategy based on fear-mongering about AI's dangers. Sacks said Anthropic has an "agenda to backdoor Woke AI and other AI regulations" by supporting state-level AI laws.

Anthropic is valued at $965 billion and has filed paperwork for an initial public offering expected in the coming months. The company has not hired a former Trump administration official to lead its AI policy efforts.
