WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump demanded that no Department of Homeland Security funding deal be made unless the SAVE America Act is passed first. Long security wait times at airports continued over the weekend during unresolved Department of Homeland Security funding.

"I don't think we should make any deal with the Crazy, Country Destroying, Radical Left Democrats unless, and until, they Vote with Republicans to pass 'THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,'" Trump wrote on Truth Social. The SAVE America Act is a bill that would require voters to present photo ID to cast their ballots, require proof of citizenship to register to vote, and ban mail-in ballots except in certain cases.

"Let Leader Thune clearly identify those few 'Republicans' that are Voting against AMERICA. They will never be elected again!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump also urged Republicans to vote to end the Senate filibuster rule, which could be done with 50 votes. The Senate filibuster rule requires 60 votes to pass most legislation, and Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, so Democratic support would be needed to pass the SAVE America Act.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune proposed funding the Department of Homeland Security except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol through party-line legislation, but President Donald Trump rejected the proposal. Democrats have opposed further funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol until President Donald Trump agrees to reforms to immigration enforcement tactics.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents began deploying at several airports across the U.S. to support Transportation Security Administration agents on Monday. "I'm interested in any strategy to get the government open, to pay the Department of Homeland Security," Senator Ted Cruz said.

President Donald Trump has demanded that lawmakers add provisions to the SAVE America Act that would ban transgender women from competing in women's sports and ban transgender-related surgeries for minors. "You can't have Homeland Security without voter ID, or proof of citizenship, so we're tying them together," Trump said during remarks in Memphis.

"Our elections should be treated with the utmost security and the SAVE America Act will ensure that they are," White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement.

Senators have been negotiating Department of Homeland Security funding for more than a month. Democrats oppose the SAVE America Act, while several Republican senators oppose ending the filibuster rule, citing their belief that the rule can force compromise between the two parties.

A version of the SAVE America Act passed the Republican-controlled House in February. Democrats offered to fund the rest of the Department of Homeland Security, including the Transportation Security Administration.
