WASHINGTON, D.C. — Kentucky Senator Rand Paul opposed President Donald Trump's strikes against Iran and announced he will not vote for the administration's request for $200 billion in additional war funding. Paul was the only Senate Republican to oppose the president's decision to launch the strikes.

A majority of Senate Republicans supported Trump's decision to launch strikes against Iran. Paul argued that the president is not allowed to begin any military action without congressional approval or an imminent attack.

He said he will not vote for the Trump administration's request for $200 billion in additional war funding because he does not want the war to continue. "Madison said that we would give the legislature certain powers and the president certain powers. And as each tried to grasp for the power, they would check and balance each other," Paul said.

"I don't think our founders ever imagined our current Congress that is completely lacking in ambition. They don't check the president," he said, criticizing Congress for failing to exercise its constitutional authority.
