A heatwave in late June 2026 across Europe resulted in over 1,000 recorded deaths, widespread power outages in France, and a request for increased power supply in the United Kingdom. Taco Engelaar, a climate tech executive, noted the human, infrastructural, and economic consequences of the extreme weather event.

"More than a thousand deaths have already been recorded from this heatwave alone," Engelaar said. He added, "Tens of thousands of homes were left without power in France as the grid buckled under the heat."

The U.K. national grid operator issued its first-ever summertime request for more power during late June 2026. This action was taken due to forecasts indicating a potential imbalance between electricity supply and demand as temperatures rose. "In the U.K., the national grid operator made its first-ever summertime plea for more power, as forecasts predicted an imbalance between supply and demand," Engelaar said.

The Met Office upgraded an extreme heat warning to red for six regions of England and Wales for June 24-25, 2026. Amber heat warnings had been in effect across England and Wales since June 22, 2026. Temperatures in these areas were forecast to exceed 30C for several consecutive days during that week.

Engelaar referenced a disparity in air conditioning availability between regions. "Around 90% of U.S. homes have air conditioning; in parts of Europe, that figure is closer to 20%," he said. He further stated, "Figures suggest Europe could be at risk of losing up to 7% of its collective GDP in the next four years due to heat-related losses."
