PROVO, UTAH — A preliminary hearing in the aggravated murder case against Tyler Robinson is scheduled to begin on July 6, 2026, in Provo, Utah. Robinson is charged with the killing of Charlie Kirk.

Prosecutors have indicated their intent to seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. Charlie Kirk's parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, and his widow, Erika Kirk, are expected to attend the hearing. Kirk was shot in the neck on September 10, 2025, while speaking to a crowd at Utah Valley University.

Prosecutors plan to present various forms of evidence during the preliminary hearing, including forensic analyses, surveillance video, recordings of witness statements, and autopsy findings. Authorities stated that DNA consistent with Robinson's was found on the trigger of the rifle used to kill Kirk, on a fired cartridge casing, on two unfired cartridges, and on a towel used to wrap the rifle.

Prosecutors also stated their intention to introduce alleged messages from Robinson admitting to the crime. One such message was a note prosecutors stated Robinson left for his romantic partner, which read, "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it." Robinson, who is 23 years old and from southwestern Utah, has not yet entered a plea to the charges.

In unrelated court proceedings, the court denied Robinson's motion to classify a filing from January 9, 2026, as private. The defendant had sought to classify his motion to exclude cameras from the courtroom as private. The court stated that the public has a presumptive right to access court records, and it denied the motion to classify the document as private.
