GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS — Galveston County commissioners unanimously approved a new redistricting map on Monday, June 29, 2026. The new map aligns Constable, Justice of the Peace, and Commissioner precincts.

"The Commissioners Court adopted a new districting plan that aligns Constable, Justice of the Peace, and Commissioner precincts," said Galveston County Judge Mark Henry. "This will improve judicial function for the Justices of the Peace, create opportunities for government fiscal efficiencies, and enhance partisan outcomes."

"It has always been my belief that overlapping Constable, Justice of the Peace, and Commissioner precincts would be the most efficient and beneficial setup," Henry said. "I ran on the promise of being a fiscal conservative and turning Galveston County Republican. This map accomplishes just that."

The new map shifts representation for Precinct Three constable and justice of the peace positions from the southeast to the north. Nearly 50 people attended the meeting. A majority of attendees expressed concern that the redistricting changes will dilute the voting power of minority voters. Attendees also stated that historically Black and Brown communities will be spread into different areas.

"Redistricting should bring communities together," one attendee said. "Not diminish the ability of longstanding to participate effectively in the democratic process." Galveston County posted the proposed map on its website eight days prior to the vote and offered a method for public feedback. Henry noted that only two people submitted remarks on the proposed map. The NAACP and LULAC have sued Galveston County over its precinct map.
