VANCOUVER — Canadian authorities suspended the search for six individuals reported missing after a charter boat sank near Vancouver on June 28, 2026. The suspension followed the rescue of four survivors and an extensive multi-agency operation.

An emergency call was received at 11:45 PT, reporting people in the water without life jackets approximately 10 miles (16km) off the coast. Three survivors were rescued by a couple on a sailboat, while search crews rescued a fourth person. The charter boat had departed from Steveston in Richmond, British Columbia, and began to take on water near Roberts Bank. The search operation utilized various resources, including passenger ferries, Coast Guard boats, Royal Canadian Mounted Police boats, helicopters, and airplanes.

Rescue officials stated their confidence that they have "exhausted all possibilities of finding anyone on the surface alive." An officer in charge of the rescue mission added, "We covered the area extensively." The Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated that the cause of the incident is "not yet known" and that the circumstances are "under investigation." Major Gregory Clarke, officer-in-charge of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, said, "We have no idea at this time." Clarke also noted that there was "no sign of any vessel at all, that is what was alarming." Clarke stated that the couple on the sailboat saved lives by calling in the incident. Officials have not identified the name of the boat that sank. The condition of the four rescued individuals has also not been identified by officials.
