BORNO STATE — Gunmen attacked the Lassa Day Secondary School in the Askira-Uba area of Borno state, Nigeria, on June 29, 2026, and kidnapped students taking secondary school examinations. Police reported that 10 people were rescued hours after the attack.

Amnesty International Nigeria stated that two teachers and one student were killed during the incident. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police spokesman Nahum Daso stated that authorities did not have a count of the abducted students. "For now, we don't have the number of how many students were abducted. We have about 10 victims who have been rescued," Daso said.

Amnesty International Nigeria commented on the safety of educational institutions, stating, "Schools should be places of safety, and no child should have to choose between their education and their life." The organization also asserted the government's responsibility. "The protection of children's lives is paramount, and the Nigerian government has a duty to ensure that the country's educational sector is not further threatened by armed groups on rampage across northern Nigeria," Amnesty International Nigeria said.

Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), are militant groups active in northeast Nigeria and the broader Lake Chad area. The Nigerian army rescued more than 300 people abducted by Boko Haram from Ngoshe earlier in June 2026. Ngoshe is located approximately 114 kilometers (71 miles) from Lassa.
